What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is known as cryolipolysis. It is a cosmetic procedure done to reduce pockets of stubborn fat. Coolsculpting works by freezing out fat cells. The procedure is non-invasive—which means that no part of the procedure will require any surgical procedure.
The procedure is done when a licensed practitioner utilizes special equipment to pull portions of the patient’s skin into a handpiece which then cools the area down. The temperatures are cool enough to kill fat cells but do not harm the tissues in the surrounding area. The average treatment takes about an hour in the office. A few weeks after treatment, the fat cells are broken down and leave your body. It typically takes around 3-4 months to see the full effects of the treatment. Some people may choose to have multiple treatments over time to sculpt the area to your ideal image.
Why Get CoolSculpting Done?
Most people at some point have dieted, exercise regularly, and successfully cut weight whether that be 5 pounds or 50 pounds but despite their best efforts, some areas of fat just stick around. This has been dubbed stubborn fat and it is often the last place you will lose fat.
It is a bit preposterous to feel like you have to get down to 8 percent body fat just to have a modestly lean figure. Many people find themselves in that situation due to situations of weight gain in childhood or early adolescence. Once those fat cells are created, they can never be reduced through ordinary means. This means that those who have higher fat cell counts can only shrink the fat deposits inside of them. Unfortunately, the presence of these extra fat storage containers makes it easier to gain fat in those areas as well.
Does CoolSculpting Work?
A review was done for the Aesthetic Surgery Journal which compared many procedures and aggregated the data to show that the mean fat reduction for the procedure was around 19.55%. Complications (side-effects) were not common and if there are any, appear to go away with time rather than medical intervention. It is important to remember that while the procedure may, in fact, reduce fat stores in the body, it does not tighten up loose skin that has become stretched due to fat deposits.
Celebrities such as Debra Messing & Johnny Weir have used CoolSculpting with great results.
Side Effects of CoolSculpting
There are few if any side effects to CoolSculpting since it is a non-invasive procedure. There are, however side effects that do occur—albeit, very rarely. When side effects do happen, they include temporary irritation/redness, swelling, bruising or skin sensitivity at the site of treatment. Sometimes people experience pain or stinging at the treatment site due to the cold temperatures used in the procedure. Cold temperature related irritation appears to be at the heart of the majority of known side effects.
